The rich, the poor, the thick and thin

Article Abstract:

Saskia Sassen, holder of the sociology chair at the University of Chicago and expert on globalisation, has credibility on both sides of the debate about globalisation, having participated in both World Social and World Economic forums. She was also one of a group of people who, after September 11 2001 argued that rich nations cannot hide behind their prosperity and that even if they didn't help poorer nations out of humanitarian reasons, they should do it out of self-interest. She believes that in the modern world, the most amazing thing is not how high the level of migration from country to country is, rather the amazing thing is how low it is.

Central line to Uzbek

Article Abstract:

Dr Shirin Akiner is head of the Central Asia Research Forum in the School of Oriental and Asian Studies, the only centre in the UK that studies the region. She is regarded as the UK's single specialist academic on this geographical area and the recent developments and changes in Kazakhstan, Kirghizistan, Tadzhikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have led to her becoming very busy of late. There have been many demands on her expertise from government and non-government organisations, various media and commerce. The School is now seeking three more lectureships.
