Research networks are key to cash quest

Researchers in institutions in Wales must combine their efforts if they are to compete effectively for research funding, according to a new report produced by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales. The report argues that if "credible" levels of research funding are not secured from external sources by Welsh institutions then the research base in the country will suffer.

The tradition of using covert techniques for research is in danger of being 'submerged' as academics and institutions over-react to increased concerns about ethics in research, according to David Calvey, senior sociology lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University. Dr Calvey feels there is a need for more dicussion on the role of covert research.

Low voter turnout raises questions of morale in UCU

Article Abstract:

Members of the University and College and Union (UCU) were disillusioned due to the confusing nature of the ballot papers with 176 candidates standing for 70 different positions. This confusion led to a very low turnover in the union's first elections, hence newly elected members are being questioned on the authenticity of ballot papers.
