Right steps on the ladder of learning

Article Abstract:

The Learning Matrix establishes teachers must ensure students are awake to the idea they are going to be taught before learning can commence. Learning starts when the student is consciously incompetent according to the Learning Matrix. The aim is to make the student competent by practice and finally be able to make use of the information, which is called unconscious competence. Teachers have a vital part to play in making sure the students are ready to learn and in giving the instruction. Computers can be best utilized to help the teacher in the practice stage of the Learning Matrix.

ROMping to the bank

Article Abstract:

New technology can create problems in education and there has not been enough thought on what teachers need. There is a need to reassess computerisation of classrooms and little has been published of work evaluating usage of computers. This means that resources may be wasted since the effectiveness of spending is not assessed. Technology should be geared to need, rather than needs being geared to what is available in technology. Low cost systems may be able to deliver more than systems consuming more resources.

Clockwork factories

Article Abstract:

Computer science has expanded in the UK in the decade to 1995, and there is a danger that colleges and universities are trying to teach too much. Computer science degrees used to be related to software but have come to include artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology and project management. Some subjects, such as software engineering, are not treated with the depth that they merit. Computer science degrees have become too abstract and false ideas may be spread about this subject.
