...think the languages crisis is helpful

Article Abstract:

An examination of the current crisis affecting the study of modern languages at university level. It is argued that this crisis is in fact a good thing, that the modern languages discipline has long been in need of an overhaul and that current modern language professors and lecturers are overpaid, undertrained and underequipped. As a result of this modern languages are currently viewed as a financial liability and as intellectually insignificant.

Speaking in tongues

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the state of language education in the United Kingdom. The drastic fall in the numbers of students studying languages is noted, with particular attention paid to the fall in those studying French, German and Spanish. It is argued that language instruction can thrive, but only if the Government is prepared to promote it as a core discipline.
