Article Abstract:

The fall of the Berlin Wall in Nov. 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1990 have triggered a re-evaluation of German history but have not led to a revival of German nationalism. Reunification has prompted historians to interrogate German national identity rather than legitimize and celebrate it. The accumulation of historical knowledge is a major influence in the development of historical interpretations, and is responsible for the abandonment of the left-liberal idea that the weaknesses of the German bourgeoisie were responsible for the triumph of Nazism in 1933.
