Rules and regulations will just cramp our style

Article Abstract:

The professor emeritus of government and director of the Centre for the Evaluation of Public Policy and Practice at Brunel University argues that the UK government's white paper on higher education and the Bologna process threaten the dynamics and values of higher education in the UK. It is suggested that the white paper and Bologna show no sympathy for or knowledge of the dynamics of higher education and that academics working in the UK higher education system are already working with their European colleagues without the plans contained within the various proposals.

Joined-up thinking

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the competing interests in higher education in the United Kingdom and the need to create a body to reconcile these interests are examined. It is argued that the creation of such a body is even more vital in the light of the government's white paper on higher education and its plans to allow institutions without research degree-awarding powers to obtain an university title as these plans could pose terminal challenges for the existing bodies that represent the institutions, Universities UK and the Standing Conference of Principals.

Academics should not lead unexamined lives

Article Abstract:

The world of higher education needs to be active in its approach to and examination of its own practices and policies instead of just reacting to external pressures. It is suggested that the best way to do this would be for universities to establish departments devoted to the study of higher education.
