Rumours of a death that may be true

Article Abstract:

Academic monographs are under pressure as academics have less time to write them, libraries have fewer resources so are less able to stock them, and their cost means that they do not have a wide market. Cambridge University Press is reducing the number of monographs that it is publishing. History is one subject that is especially badly hit. New technology could allow for smaller print runs that are cheaper, so help to provide a solution to problems affecting monographs.
