Sector caught in parent trap

Article Abstract:

The parents of prospective university students are going to increasingly extraordinary lengths to influence their child's choice of university, according to a survey of admissions tutors. Of the 33 heads of admissions surveyed, over 80% stated that parents were having a growing impact on how candidates choose institutions and courses, while many admissions tutors noted that they had had parents asking to attend interviews or phoning and pretending to be applicants.

Johnson acts to halt closures

Article Abstract:

The government wants early notice of university plans to cut 'strategically important' subjects as it emerged that almost one quarter of the country's physics departments are vulnerable. Alan Johnson, Education Secreteray, has written to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) requesting early notification of any universities planning closures in subjects such as chemistry, physics and mathematics.

Working class still lags on campus

Article Abstract:

The proportion of people from working-class backgrounds accepted on higher education courses in 2005 has changed little, according to new data, despite government efforts and institutions to expand participation in higher education. In 2005, the proportion of applicants from families in 'routine' occupations fell slightly compared with 2004.
