Selling science short

Article Abstract:

Universities rely so heavily on the Government for funding, that research projects based purely on academic objectives are being delayed or cancelled because they are being given a lower priority than projects which are designed to meet business and economic requirements. Government funding councils, such as the Foresight Programme, have been set up to ensure that projects which help to stimulate the country's economic performance, and not just to further world knowledge, will be funded. Critics are concerned that university research will soon no longer exist.

Taming of the screw

Article Abstract:

Government funding for British universities has been reduced yet again, reducing the per capita amount by 25%. The universities object strongly to these cuts, and have stated that the quality of further education is suffering as a direct result. The Higher Education Funding Council for England will have to review all capital expenditure, but hopes to keep the projects which it has already committed to. Private Finance Initiatives have succeeded in raising money for high profile projects, although poor results for the more mundane projects as expected.

Choice of freedom or mediocrity

Article Abstract:

Universities of the United Kingdom need to dramatically change their funding mechanism to ensure their survival in the future. Repeated cuts to university funding have been made by this government, including those of the Nov. 1995 budget. Funding councils are looking at a 'Government deficit charge' to be imposed on student's fees. Student representatives are against such 'top-up' fees and will object strongly if they are initiated.
