Sex, lies and electronic tags

Article Abstract:

An examination of the potential for using polygraphy techniques, or lie detector tests, in order to prevent sex offenders from reoffending in the light of the publication of "Sex Offenders in the Community: Managing and Reducing the Risks" by Don Grubin, a professor in the Sexual Behaviour Unit at Newcastle University. While the scientific community has, to date, been sceptical about the usefulness of lie detector tests, Grubin details how lie detector tests were used on 30 sex offenders on probation and argues that he believes these tests prevented at least three of those tested from reoffending.

A voice of sanity in ministers' ears

Article Abstract:

Louis Appleby, professor of psychiatry at the University of Manchester and national director for mental health, is working in his role as the UK's mental health tsar to assuage the fears of critics of the government's plans to change the country's mental health legislation. Critics fear that the changes, which include new conditions for the compulsory treatment of the mentally ill, could result in an erosion of civil liberties. Appleby's aim is to get the balance right between protecting the rights of the patient and the needs of the community.
