South Africa jobs fear

Article Abstract:

South African universities and technikons are expecting a real-terms budget cut announcement in early 1997. Organisational slack has been absorbed in previous financial cutbacks so institutions may have to take measures which will result in job losses and the exclusion of poor students. Student debt is an enormous problem in South Africa. The government set up a financial aid system for students in 1995 but it is finding it difficult to fund this and has appealed to international donors for help.

Cuts put jobs in danger

Article Abstract:

Universities and technikons in South Africa are considering how to deal with a dramatic cut in state funding. It is possible that a number of institutions will have to close small departments, and many jobs may be at risk. Those institutions which have not yet resorted to freezing posts or attempting to reduce staffing levels will look at ways of reducing costs and restructuring in 1998. At the University of Natal, for example, 600 jobs are likely to be reconsidered.

Boost for black universities

Article Abstract:

The South African government has announced increased funding levels for black technikons and universities from its Student Financial Aid Scheme. Many of these institutions have accumulated debts since poorers students have often been unable to pay, and funding levels have dropped in real terms. Some universities in areas previously called bantustans will see drops in funding, however, and these universities previously had higher funding levels.
