South secures research cash

Article Abstract:

Supporters of England's northern universities in February 2007 criticized health chiefs for diverting more biomedical research funding into institutions in the South to the detriment of medical science and patient care in the North. The northern institutions claimed that all the universities chosen as England's comprehensive biomedical research centers of excellence are in the "golden triangle" of Oxford, Cambridge and London, a situation that will perpetuate the funding inequality also present in the National Health Services.

Vice-chancellor Mike Thorne of Anglia Ruskin University criticizes the U.K. Government's for encouraging people to consider education merely as a means of getting a job. Thorne asserts government education policies are Treasury-motivated and promote an instrumental view of education.
