Sparking interest in academics: welding class helps students improve English, math grades

Article Abstract:

The Crossland High School in Temple Hills, MD, conducted an experimental program which aimed to improve the academic performance of welding students by incorporating math and English training within their vocational course. Academic activities included writing about the different aspects of their projects and solving mathematical problems related to the welding jobs. The program aimed to strike a balance between academics and skills training and modifications were adopted to achieve this. Majority of the students' academic and welding performances improved or were maintained as a result of the program.

The Dream Team: four teachers savor the ultimate classroom experience

Article Abstract:

The Dauphin County Technical School (DCTS) embarked on an experimental educational program for ninth grade students in 1991. DCTS assigned four teachers to prepare joint academic projects that integrate academics with vocational courses. English teacher Deborah Schmidt, social studies teacher Nancy Prete, math teacher Jack Moyer and science teacher Greg Shuman formed the Dream Team tasked to cover the required curriculum using their own methods. The Dream Team found the program effective and were satisfied that they were able to intract with their students.

The play's the thing: integrated curriculum makes even Shakespeare relevant to vo-tech students

Article Abstract:

The Polytech High School of Kent County, DE, adopted an integrated curriculum for its vocational courses in 1991. The school divided its grades 10 to 12 students into academic clusters which are handled by five acedemic teachers. The faculty decides the class strategies to be used and works as team to implement these strategies. The teachers are trained in team teaching and group dynamics to facilitate interaction between themselves and the students. Polytech makes use of teacher evaluations and student feedback to further improve this educational program.
