Starter for ten: why does a quiz show matter?

Article Abstract:

Producer of Granada Television's 'University Challenge' Peter Gwyn describes the 27-year-old quiz show as just a bit of fun, but he acknowledges that it affects the public's perception of an institution. Birkbeck College is still reeling from the effects of suffering the worst defeat in the history of 'University Challenge' in Dec. 1996. The 1997 finalists, the Open University (OU) and Magdalen College, Oxford, have both attracted huge media interest. The OU is seen as a university for everyone so its team is always the most popular, while the winning Magdalen team consisted entirely of ex-state school students.

The last shall be first

Article Abstract:

Helena Kennedy QC's report on post-compulsory education launched on Jul. 2, 1997, calls for radical measures to widen participation in learning. These include a major injection of cash for further education as well as a shift of funds to people with the worst qualifications. The report points out that universities account for two thirds of the post-school education budget yet are attended by only a quarter of England's 5 million post-16 learners. Kennedy proposes a new funding system based on postcodes to favour the socially deprived.
