Student unrest rocks Swaziland royal rulers

Article Abstract:

The University of Swaziland has been hit by protests stemming from Black Wednesday in Nov 1990 when several hundred students were injured, some seriously. The authorities have been criticised for lack of transparency in investigating the events of 1990 and there is criticism of the lack of freedom for political parties to operate. The government argues that political activists are using the students for political motives to replace the traditional political system with a multi-party system.

The measure of imperial rulers

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the concept of "empire" and the meaning of the term in history is made in the light of arguments that we are entering an age dominated by the American empire. It is suggested that empires are established for a number of reasons, including a desire to dominate, am urge to impose order on haphazard conquest and even a wish to do good, but what all empires have in common is that they usually end when nobody expects them today.

An ancient high ideal that makes brutes of us all

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the works and life of Aristotle is made as part of argument that the Aristotlean vision of the 'civilising' empire has seduced George W. Bush and Tony Blair in the same way that it seduced Alexander the Great. Parallels are drawn between the actions of Bush and Blair in Iraq and the works of Aristotle.
