Study seen as jobs passport

Article Abstract:

Many young people who choose to study at universities in the UK do so in order to improve their job prospects. They feel that having a degree is essential if they wish to establish a successful career. A considerable number already have a specific career in mind when they choose their degree course. However, a strongly vocational course may not lead more directly to employment than a more general course. Students who take sandwich courses seem to have the best chance of finding a job quickly after graduating.

Truly inglorious end to Britain's 'dark, gritty and nasty' days of Empire in Kenya

Article Abstract:

David Anderson, author of the book "Histories of the Hanged", argues that the end of the British Empire in Kenya was not the orderly affair that is often put forward, rather it was a brutal period that needs to be addressed more openly. It is contended that the British government needs to look at the events that took place in Kenya in the 1950s in much the same way that the French have addressed events that took place in Algeria.
