Swiss pave the way for centralised system

Article Abstract:

The Swiss parliament is discussing proposals to make university planning more centralised and to enhance both competition and cooperation between the historically cantonal universities. The federal government hopes to establish a Swiss University Conference and aims to form a new agreement with the cantons. The universities have a good research record but the government is concerned that technology is transferred to the economy too slowly while decision-making is too democratic. Federal funding will in future be associated with outputs such as research volume.

Mine is an ecosystem

Article Abstract:

The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) has successfully participated in a joint project with the University of Zimbabwe to develop an inexpensive method of rehabilitating former mine sites in Zimbabwe. Scientists developed a self-sustaining ecosystem after finding indigenous plants which would bind the toxic residues on the extraction sites. The methodology can be applied to other mining sites worldwide. The SEI aims to make a real contribution to the country where it conducts research activities.
