Tapping into adult passion

Article Abstract:

The notion of community helps in understanding UK education policy under a possible Labor party government. The Labor leader, Tony Blair, has great enthusiasm for education. Adults and children should become involved in educational projects, and parents need help in order to be able to help their children. The rich tradition of higher and adult education in the UK helps bring together notions of community and education. Projects such as Community Service Volunteers are also relevant to this vision of education.

Students lead the third way

Article Abstract:

Students have been criticised as apathetic compared to the radicals of 1968, but reality is more complex. There were complaints that students were apathetic in 1968, and it is easy to misinterpret disaffection and see it as apathy. Students demonstrated in 1988 when their financial interests were under threat. The debate among student unions in 1998 focused less on opposition to tuition fees, where there was widespread agreement, and more on environmental issues, which were seen as more controversial.

Small performers feel the student squeeze

Article Abstract:

Under 1% of total United Kindhom students choose to study physics, though student numbers have risen to 3,183 in 1997 from 2,821 in 1991. Some departments have not been able to meet targets for numbers of students admitted, and these departments run the risk of being closed down. The University of East Anglia and other smaller departments also risk closure due to the cost of equipment. Meanwhile, universities are satisfied with the quality of students recruited to to go in for PhDs in physics.
