Labouring under a new challenge

Article Abstract:

The UK House of Commons Education and Employment Select Committee is unlikely to resolve the recruitment crisis in the teaching profession by bring older graduates into the profession. The labour market for teachers needs to be managed to ensure that mature teachers are not discriminated against in favour of cheaper young teachers. Graduates should be paid during their Post Graduate Certificate of Education course but the Committee has only agreed to suspend the payment of fees. The Labour Government's plans to raise educational standards will not be met, without more teachers.

Open all hours for the masses

Article Abstract:

Higher education in the UK should allow people to study throughout their life particularly to retrain, as the incidence of unemployment increases. The number of students aged over 21 years applying to universities, during 1987-1992, rose by 215%. Universities will need to reorganisation their services to accomodate the need for additional education provision. Lecturers may have outside work rather than be full-time academics. Many observers have expressed concern that fewer students are studying science, engineering and maths but work opportunities in these fields are limited.
