Lace under heavyweight fire

Article Abstract:

A UK graduate student who carried out research into the lace industry in Nottingham, England, has complained about the way her PhD was supervised and the examination procedure. She argues that she was given less than the required number of meetings with her supervisor, though he argues that she could have telephoned him. She studied at the University of Nottingham, England. She was not granted a PhD, but her work has since been published with a foreward by an historian who was previously at Oxford University, praising her work.

Folk fight to fill the house

Article Abstract:

Bristol Folk House is an adult education center in Bristol, England, and has received a donation of 30,000 pounds sterling to keep running. The center feared it would have to close due to lack of funds but has achieved a respite with the donation. The center has suffered a drop in funding from Avon County and has had to increase fess as a result. The center provides many non-vocational courses which are important for older people but which attract less in government support.

Women get bonus for staying the course

Article Abstract:

Women returning to work are being paid 80 pounds sterling for completing a training course in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The Belfast Women's Training Group has been commended in the UK Adult Learners' Week by judges praising this innovation. Eight women's centers in Belfast set up the training group in 1993. Many women undergoing training have never worked before and many also have commitments to children and elderly relatives which hinder training.
