Article Abstract:

The New Zealand Government is due to undertake a 'fundamental review' of the country's universities. The vice chancellors' committee in New Zealand hopes the review will include a study of the delivery requirements of the tertiary sector and the most suitable procedures for funding. A major change in long-term policy is not anticipated, however, due to the combined pressures of increasing demand for university places and the probable restrictions on public funding. Students will simultaneously demand better quality education as their financial contribution towards their education increases.

Sure start on unclear aims

Article Abstract:

The new Labour government in New Zealand has already made some changes to the student loan system although administrative difficulties has left many students without their fees. Education Minister Steve Mahrey has called for the end of a competitive system yet funding for the government is based on the number of students at each establishment, which encourages competition for students. He may choose to give extra funds to some universities in less accessible areas but he is likely to be inundated with requests for money.

Don't co-opt, just cooperate

Article Abstract:

New Zealand's universities need to expand their existing collaborative efforts with one another and with industry if they are to respond to economic needs and produce more science-based graduates. However, wider social changes are also needed, while government intervention is not.
