The day all chaos broke loose

Article Abstract:

Long-term weather forecasting is not possible, according to the chaos theory of meteorologist Edward Lorenz. Lorenz introduced the idea that tornados can be the result of a butterfly's wings flapping in another part of the world, with his theory of the unpredictability of random behaviour subsequently applied to other academic research fields such as economics and mathematics. Lorenz discovered the theory after noticing that long-term weather predictions would change drastically when the computer data used to determine them were marginally altered.

An improved shelf life

Article Abstract:

The University of London library is located in Senate House, London, England, and has been affected by changes in funding arrangement by the university. The library is not sure of its funding for the 1995-1996 academic year, and this affects its ability to budget. Private sources account for 23% of the library's funding in 1995. The library receives fees from private researchers and colleges, and is also used for free by students at universities other than London.
