The gift that can carry a hefty price

Article Abstract:

While collections can boost the standing of the academic institutions that house them, disputes over ownership and the potential influence of the Data Protection Act highlight the need to establish the purpose and legal standing of an archive. Examples of the problems institutions have faced, such as Churchill College which had to appeal for public money to buy the papers of Winston Churchill after a member of the Churchill family decided to withdraw them from the college's stewardship and sell them, are given.

Academic exchanges under threat as scientists are refused entry visas

Article Abstract:

Universities in the United Kingdom criticize the situation whereby Iraqi and other Middle East academics visiting for study and research are refused entry visas into the U.K. They are concerned that it would hamper mutual cooperation in academic research.
