'The peer-review system is creaking under the weight of work. How many grants can we assess and still find time to mark several hundred essays?'

Article Abstract:

The increasing burden of assessment of one form or another that is being faced by university and college faculty members is analysed in attempt to ascertain whether peer review is still the best option for research assessment or is it time to look for other answers. It is suggested that the next research assessment exercise would be the ideal time to compare various metric analyses against the existing peer-review system.

A competitive streak that makes us all losers

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the research assessment exercise (RAE), the impact it has on academics and the way in which academics have accepted it as the best solution to the problem of academic assessment. It is argued that the blind acceptance of the RAE by academics will eventually destroy most of those that take part in it.

Arguments about peer review are rife--is it fair, is it efficient, is it appropriate? But in the end we all say it's the best we have, albeit costly in time'

An analysis of the existing system of academic peer review. It is argued that if the rules for academic review are to be changed, then those who actually do the work should be the ones driving the agenda.
