The players behind the Games

Article Abstract:

A large number of academics are involved in the preparations for the Olympic Games due to be held in Sydney, Australia, in the year 2000. Some scientists are working on developing new methods of discovering if the athletes have taken drugs. Others are trying to find ways of helping the athletes cope with the high levels of pollen expected in Sydney when the games are due to be held. Some academics are looking into diverse problems, such as coping with the large number of tourists anticipated during the event and others have been working with architects designing the Olympic stadium.

Locked in the ivory tower

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour government has maintained the previous government's demand for academics to increase publications and productivity so that their output can be measured according to bureaucratic terms of 'professionalism.' The requirement allows hard-working, quieter academics to demonstrate their output, but it also requires academics to focus on output instead of teaching and subsequently inhibits the interaction between academy and society. Academics will become out of touch with the real world, to the detriment of disciplines such as sociology.
