Thin gruel of cliche will never win votes

Article Abstract:

An examination of the life of the Conservative Party's most durable leader, Edward Geoffrey Stanley, 14th earl of Derby (1799-1869), is made in the light of a recent statement by current leader Michael Howard about the direction he believes the party should take. Stanley led the Conservatives for more than 20 years and was the first Englishman in the modern period to be prime minister three times. It is suggested that Howard might be wise to consider the way that Stanley acknowledged that the ruling classes had social responsibilities and that foreign policy required a pragmatic eye rather than a mouthful of jingoistic rabble-rousing.

John McKenzie, the director of international development at the London Institute describes the reasoning behind his decision to become non-executive director of Leeds United plc, a football club. McKenzie argues that while his position at the London Institute may be more secure than his new position, there is nothing quite like the experience of seeing his own team win.
