Think your way out

Article Abstract:

Many higher education institutions in the UK feel overwhelmed by external pressures, but the answer lies not in adopting a defensive attitude towards Government reports and statements, but in developing new academic ideas and new ways of teaching and learning. Institutions need to adapt to changes in the market for higher education while being absolutely clear about their particular purpose, strengths and aims. Institutions must not allow the Government to set the higher education agenda, complacency being the greatest threat to the traditions of academic excellence and freedom.

Routes to a knowledge industry

Article Abstract:

Universities which choose to build alliances with industry will improve the quality of their courses. It may lead to some departments becoming multidisciplinary to satisfy the demands of modern industry. Costs would therefore be shared for collaborative research projects. Universities must change their organisation to allow more closer ties with industry. Working together will benefit the whole economy. It could also lead to more beneficial research. The Association of European Universities has called for all universities to forge greater links with society.
