Time for society to see old people in a new light

Article Abstract:

Demographic change means that the proportion of older people is increasing, and many are older women with little money. Older people tend to be seen in terms of their needs rather than their economic and social roles. Older people tend to be represented as victims in the press, and appear little on TV. Universities and colleges have to assess their policies toward older people, including retirement ages for staff, and ways in which they can welcome older students. Some 20% of students at the Open University are more than 50-years-old.

All quiet on Serbian front pages

Article Abstract:

The Serbian media failed to report major anti-government protests in November 1996, with the concept of a free press still not appreciated despite the growing democratic climate. The Serbian broadcasting industry remains subserviant to the Government as opposed to the public following years of communist rule. A number of journalists and academics from around the world met with Serbian Member of Parliament Dragoljub Micunovic to discuss broadcasting's role in emerging democracies.
