The shock will hit the new

Article Abstract:

British universities used a variety of methods to lose around 3,000 jobs in 1996. Compulsory redundancy, voluntary redundancy, redeployment and early retirement were all used, with early retirement the primary method as it can be funded by the university's pension scheme. Job losses were highest among the new universities, with the method selected dependent on the university's financial position. Early retirement costs may in future be covered less by the Teachers' Superannuation Scheme under Government proposals.
