To the victors, the spoils?

Article Abstract:

Historian Niall Ferguson argues that almost everyone aged under 40 in Britain has been infected with Acquired Wartime Nostalgia Syndrome and that the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, 1995, will reflect a positive, even idyllic vision of the second world war. Historian Andrew Roberts sees the second world war as seminal to Britain's national lifestyle and argues that the way in which different countries reacted to the war has conditioned Britain's attitudes to them. Historian David Edgerton maintains that the second world war created a warfare, rather than a welfare, state.

He who sups with the devil must use a long spoon - and bring a good agent

Article Abstract:

Historians who are asked to write an authorised company history should view the request with some caution. The company may not open all its files to the author, it may request that some material is not included, or it may refuse to publish the finished work. Potential authors can, however, take measures to avoid this type of censorship. These measures include the negotiation of an appropriate contract by a good agent, and the offering of draft copies of chapters, as they are prepared, to the company. Experiences from the production of a history of N. M. Rothschild & Sons illustrate these points.

From extracts to sex tracts

Article Abstract:

The author of a book about white Jewish thinker Arthur Koestler discusses the Daily Telegraph's serialisation of his book. The Telegraph's assurances that its readers would be interested in Koestler's politics and that the lurid details of Koestler's private life, such as his rape of Michael Foot's wife Jill Craigie, would be handled sensitively proved worthless. The author, who had agreed to allow the Telegraph to select what it saw fit, was horrified to discover that all the extracts printed focused on such matters as seduction, rape and Koestler's women friends.
