Traces on vellum offer clues to the definitive Chaucerian text

Article Abstract:

Several classic manuscripts are undergoing thorough investigation by the use of digitalisation and the creation of databases for individual authors. The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England, has been working alongside other establishments and libraries to study the work of Chaucer. The use of computers has extended the depth of knowledge on how the books were made. It also allows work to be carried on electronics manuscripts which would not be possible on the real manuscripts. Many researchers have put their work onto CD-Roms and some information can be found on the Internet.

Cure for hype on the cards

Article Abstract:

Librarians have the most appropriate skills for cataloguing metadata, the data which provides access to a specified information source on the Internet. Web page authors automatically include metadata tags, but they may also include several unassociated, invisible, but commonly-sought words to attract a greater number of users to the site. Librarians could be trusted to precisely describe the material and manage the metadata most efficiently, and are highly skilled in mediating between information and user.

Just in time economics regulate the data race

Article Abstract:

UK university libraries are faced with budgetary constraints which means that they are under pressure to automate. Libraries are charging for services for which there was previously no charge, and business management is a skill which has to be acquired by librarians. Monitoring of usage of serials can be carried out by computer to ensure that when journals are cancelled it is those which are least read which go first. Publishers would also like access to data on users of their products.
