US cellist has some tips for British social harmony

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Richard Sennett argues that Gordon Brown is right and Tony Blair and Margaret Hodge, minister for higher education, are wrong in that when giving help to the poor, unsentimental respect is better than patronising pity. Sennett examines the themes of his latest book, "Respect in a World of Inequality", in which he criticises what he defines as " social jazz", the belief that all that is required to improve human relations at work, school or on the streets is a combination of goodwill and improvisation.
