United front aims to end casual labour

Article Abstract:

Many United Kingdom academics have to apply to a number of universities in order to obtain short-term contracts. Employers argue that they are forced to cut costs so have to use short-term contracts because they are cheaper. Advertising costs and staff turnover have become problems for universities, and the quality of teaching and research is affected, with casual staff receiving little management and development support. Some 44% of academic staff are employed on short-term contracts.

Competition's bleeding edge

Article Abstract:

It is misguided to state that information technology will transform the learning process. It is certain that the teaching and learning experience in higher education establishments will undergo changes, but there will be few cases of real transformation. Believing that a transformation will take place could make it a reality, and this would have very serious consequences for the higher education system in the UK.
