The brain maker

Article Abstract:

Gatsby Foundation Computational Neuroscience Unit at University College London, England, Head Scientist Geoffrey Hinton suggests computers are already capable of thinking and can be programmed to learn. Hinton left North America after 17 years working on brain research in US and Canadian universities. He had initially left the UK in 1982, after finding it impossible to to carry out research into brain computation. He is going to lead a team of scientists at the neuroscience unit which has a 10 million pound grant. They will study neural networks and artificial intelligence.

1.2% of profs... 11% of the UK workforce

Article Abstract:

Statistics published by THES show that out of the workforce in the UK, 11% are disabled, but out of professors working in British universities only 1.2% have a disability. Universities need to look at their equality policies in regard to disabilities and lack of promotion for ethnic minorities and women.

Social science takes a place at High Table

Article Abstract:

Oxford University, England, established a Department of Sociology at the end of the 1990's. Anthony Heath who as head of the department will coordinate the subject's move into the mainstream and his work are discussed.
