Universal truths
Article Abstract:
Laurence Krauss, cosmologist at Yale University, says that new theories are required to estimate the age of the universe. Studies of nebulae distances suggest that the universe is around eight billion years old. Observations of stellar processes indicate that the oldest stars are up to 18 billion years old. Krauss suggests that if the universe is dominated by a vacuum with a non-zero energy density, not by matter or radiation, then the earth's rate of expansion would not be constant. Using nebulae distances the age could then be 20 billion years. Alternatively the weight of matter in the universe may be slowing expansion. Predictions are complicated by the factor of unseen dark matter.
