Into the darkness

Article Abstract:

In most of the ancient world slaves were not predominantly of one race of people. Yet chattel slavery in the New World, during the 19th century, was linked closely to race. The religion of slaves was important in the past, such as to newly Christianized Rome where Jews were not permitted to keep Christian slaves. But by the Middle Ages Muslims were using black slaves to carry out the most humiliating type of work. It has been suggested the attitudes to black slaves by the Muslims was adopted by Spanish explorers when they travelled and conquered the New World leading.

Hatred of the partially familiar

Article Abstract:

Historians should not single out the ethnic minorities as having the only claim to a group identity, leaving everyone else without their own identity. It is possible such attitudes could lead to the rise of a neo-fascist movement. Some minority groups are using the fact they are seen as different to reinforce their own identity. The identity of an individual is seen as being closely linked to their ethnic origin. The introduction of a policy of political correctness, in the UK, over racial issues has led to the creation of new more difficult problems.
