Unwanted presence

Article Abstract:

Reports of insistent knocking and a cold presence in the Combination Room at Peterhouse, Cambridge, the oldest of the Cambridge colleges, have caused much speculation among the college fellows. A member of the pantry staff alerted the dean in Nov. 1997 after witnessing an apparition followed by wild knocking. The dean summoned the diocesan exorcist who advised that the presence of a ghost required a requiem mass of the whole body of Peterhouse fellows and domestic staff. The dean, a philosophical theologian, has been investigating the possible identity of the presence.

Angels in dirty places

Article Abstract:

A new group made up of theologians in their 20s and 30s has emerged in the UK. The group's members come from universities across the country, but the group has a strong base in Cambridge, England. These theologians regard themselves as 'radically orthodox.' They believe in miracles and angels, along with the more mainstream aspects of Catholic faith, including the Virgin Birth and the Resurrection. They seek to return the world to a broad theological framework, challenging the view that there is a world separate from what God is doing.

A rock in a hard place

Article Abstract:

Susan Hawley is researching links between religion, politics and culture. She has traveled to Nicaragua to study Miskitu Indians and their links with Moravian protestantism. She has also examined liberation theology and has respect for it, despite its romanticism over poor people. The Miskitu developed a cultural identity around Morovain ideas, and they opposed Sandinistas who were Catholic liberationists, since they perceived them as communists.
