V-cs fight to keep autonomy

Article Abstract:

Vice-chancellors of Australian universities are resisting demands from the federal government for tighter control of their overseas operations. There are currently over 70,000 overseas students enrolled in offshore operations run by Australian universities, with projections indication that over the next decade, income from overseas operations will outstrip that generated by onshore operations. Brendan Nelson, Education Minister, contends that with such growth, it is only a matter of time before "something unacceptable" happens and, therefore, greater controls are needed.
