Voting can damage your health

Article Abstract:

Democracy is under threat in developing countries, and is not necessarily helpful in promoting economic development, as optimistically argued by a 1990 G-7 meeting. The number of states beoming formally democratic has increased, but there are also problems, and these can be linked to a variety of factors. Inequalities in wealth, ethnic divisions, and economic and political transitions all tend to hinder the development of democracy. The instability associated with a move to democracy also means that there may be a move away from deocratic forms of government.

Family values and the GOP

Article Abstract:

The economic slowdown characteristic of the US prior to the 1992 elections precluded the Republican Party from anchoring the presidential platform on economic issues. As a result, Pres George Bush's bid for re-election was grounded on his image as a protector of family and values against modern-day social ills. However, this strategy may backfire if voters feel alienated from the stereotypical family portrayed and see it as a distraction from the more important economic issue.

Stumped by the selectors

Article Abstract:

Australian selectors made a mistake in choosing the one-day team for the Carlton & United finals cricket series on the basis of one-day victories over the New Zealand team. The selectors should pick the best available cricketers, choose a captain that matches the team and fine-tune the combination rather than making wholesale changes.
