Article Abstract:

During the French Revolution it was suggested that a new calendar be introduced, to commemorate the event and reduce the influence of religious observance. It was proposed by the astronomer Lalande, and followed up by the mathematician Romme. He suggested 12 30-day months, with extra days in September, and three sessions of ten days instead of four weeks. Time measurements would also be changed to the decimal system. These ideas were never fully adopted, although changes in weights and measures did take place.
