Astronomical time

Article Abstract:

Astronomical time is the basis for civil time. It is based on the repetition of astronomical events, most obviously the regular occurrence of night and day caused by the rotation of the earth. Astronomical time describes the orientation of the Earth in respect to an inertial reference frame. Astronomical time scales are also based on the Earth's revolution around the Sun. Sidereal time is the measurement of the apparent motion of stars in relation to the earth; it is defined as the local hour angle of the vernal equinox. Solar time has been historically used as the basis for civil time. Mean solar time is defined through the use of a direction that is defined mathematically in the celestial reference system.
