We don't lack skill - just political will

Article Abstract:

Policymakers in the United Kingdom could have contained, or possibly even prevented, disasters such as BSE or foot-and-mouth disease if they had not dismissed the advice of scientific experts. It is argued that policymakers have in the past been too keen to dismiss the advice of the UK's scientific community - which has proved itself to be able to deliver scientific discoveries efficiently, effectively and economically - in order to pursue more publicly and politically palatable policies, thereby leaving the way open for otherwise avoidable catastrophes to occur.

Money matters in doing science that matters

Article Abstract:

An examination of the place of the United Kingdom among the world's scientific powers in the light of British scientists winning of shares in three of the four 2003 Nobel Prizes for chemistry, physics, physiology or medicine and economics. It is argued that the recent Nobel prize wins merely serve to mask the fall of the UK as a dominant scientific power and that only greater investments of cash in research will reverse this decline.

Article Abstract:

Issues relating to the level of good or harm done by science administrators are examined. It is suggested that science administrators in the United Kingdom do more harm than good, creating a layer of red tape that makes it difficult for scientists to find any time to do any actual research.
