What is the use of maths?

Article Abstract:

The French educational system is increasingly adopting an approach based on practice rather than theory. The application of this approach to the mathematics department means that senior school students are learning rules and mathematical statements by rote, without backing them up with proof. This is a short-sighted approach. Complex mathematics is increasingly used in different realms, including finance, and the users ought to have the understanding to accompany the usage, and the ability to challenge where necessary.
