'Whitening' of Black Wednesday; the Exchange Rate Mechanism has lost none of its attractions

Article Abstract:

Some observers feel that the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) withdrawal has left a gap in UK economic policy. The ERM was initiated in 1979 to make financial trading easier in the EC. Doubts set in about the strength of the ERM after the difficulties over uniting all EC currencies. The UK and Italy have left the ERM and other European currencies have devalued but remained members. Some observers hope that a unified currency for Europe is still a possibility.
