Why are the best degrees for sale?

Article Abstract:

An analysis of research conducted by a team headed by Claire Callender for the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Universities UK which revealed that students who engage in paid work during term-time in order to finance their university education perform less well academically than those who do not have to work. It is argued that steps need to be taken to address this, as it effectively means that, in the main, only the better off will be getting the best degrees.

Put away your pom-poms and start to shout

Article Abstract:

The need for academics to make a stand on the political stage is becoming more and more urgent as the "War on Terror" continues. It is argued that the idea that academics should demonstrate "neutrality" is not an option and that academics have, as part of their job, an unavoidably political function.

The unusual use of words, common even in official university language, is condemned, suggesting that Humpty Dumpty's lesson on the realpolitik of language must be incorporated of using words to convey only appropriate and intended meanings.
