If the power of book retailers grows, academic books for the general reader could become a thing of the past. It is important that synthetic historical texts intended for a broader audience continue to be published and the main threat to such texts is from consolidation of commercial book retailing.

A personal account of dealing with first year university students. It is argued that while it may be rewarding to teach students with open minds, too many first year students appear to be intellectually naive and have little experience of life.
