Yeast's fizz lifts a Tyne brew

Article Abstract:

Newcastle University is involved in running All saints College, a school established three years ago to replace the failing West Denton High school. The college received a GBP6.3 million injection of government funding and since its establishment in 2003, the number of students achieveing five or more A*-C grades at GCSE has risen to 40 percent, from 13 percent. Newcastel University's contribution to the college is in providing advice to the school and providing a network of contacts.

Stronghold of academic rule besieged by federal camps

Article Abstract:

Oxford and Cambridge universities are unique among UK higher education institutions in that they are pure democracies, with dons able to vote on every decision proposed by the vice-chancellor and the management team. In autumn 2006, however, dons will vote on changes in the way Oxford is run and this is welcomed by some.

Universities and lawyers are preparing for a rise in litigation as fees change expectations of students. Since the introduction of tuition fees students have been quicker to complain and are expected to become keener to secure value for money.
