...have no regrets about leaving academe

Article Abstract:

The head of the Housing and Homelessness Unit at the Greater London Authority describes why he has no regrets about leaving the world of academe after becoming increasingly disillusioned with his work and remuneration. He argues that while in the past academics had to trade off a high level of personal autonomy against reasonable financial rewards, now, unless you work at one of a very limited number of institutions, personal autonomy has all but disappeared and the financial rewards have dropped from merely inadequate to truly ludicrous.

I will face the gun to fight for academic freedom

Article Abstract:

The former secretary-general of the University of Zimbabwe Students Unions discusses his experiences of the repressive regime of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe and how it monitors and controls what goes on in the world of academia. He argues that the Association of Commonwealth Universities prefers to ignore the evidence of what is going on and take no action against Zimbabwe, despite the imposition of sanctions by other groups, such as the European Union and the Commonwealth.

Farwell to 'cuddly' ethos of yesteryear

Article Abstract:

A personal recollection of the sociology department at York University in the 1960s and a comparison with the department and the York University of today is made ahead of the British Sociological Association annual conference, which is due to take place at York University between 22-24 March 2004. The sociology department at York currently faces an uncertain future as students pot to study courses that offer an obvious vocational pay-off for their tuition fee.
