Elite 19 may reject cash bonus

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom's elite Russell Group of 19 research-intensive universities has discussed plans to ignore the government's plans to "golden hellos" of UKPd9,000 in order to attract lecturers into shortage subjects. If the group goes ahead with its plans it could scupper a Labour party manifesto commitment. A Russell Group source states that the government's plans are precisely the sort of micro-management that the government had promised to remove and that it is too much for the group to stomach. The source added that even if the group could stomach the plans, the sums that the government is proposing are too small to make any difference.

Free up our enterprise

Article Abstract:

As part of efforts to create a sound financial framework for universities in the UK, the government could consider lowering the dependence of universities on block grants and allow them to develop services that their customers - namely the public, students, charities, business and the government - should be prepared to pay a fair price for. It is argued that if the government were to reduce the dependence of universities on grants, then they would be able to develop portfolios that would benefit the community and would be able to pursue a consistent academic strategy that would not be subject to changes in the Treasury purse.
