Analyze oil to determine circuit-breaker condition

Article Abstract:

Insulating oil analysis in power transformers has been shown to be an effective non-intrusive way of testing the integrity of power transformers. Advances in insulating oil analysis methods now examine dissolved gas, particle profile, moisture, interfacial tension, color, acid number and dielectric breakdown voltage as indicators of potential trouble in the transformer. Insulating oil analysis has proven itself a useful tool in reliability centered maintenance.

Repair or retire: what to do with used transformers

Article Abstract:

The decision to repair or replace a distribution transformer is difficult because electric utilities have to weigh the cost of higher transformer losses against the costs of buying a new one. Jacksonville Electric Authority determines core and winding losses to help in its decision-making.
